WHAT IS EMDR?

Working with memory and present response

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy approach that attends to distressing memories, related beliefs, emotions and physical responses.

The therapist and client establish a shared focus, use bilateral stimulation within the agreed process and review what emerges at a pace suited to the person.

In the therapy room

  • Preparation: orientation and shared planning
  • Focus: a memory, trigger or present concern
  • Processing: attention to images, beliefs, emotions and body responses
  • Review: checking what has changed and what needs further attention
HOW IT WORKS

A structured process, paced to the person

EMDR follows a structured framework while the pace and focus are adapted to the person.

1. Prepare

Establish orientation, resources and a shared plan.

2. Identify the focus

Clarify the memory, trigger or concern being addressed.

3. Process

Use bilateral stimulation while noticing what emerges.

4. Review and integrate

Review current responses and plan further work if needed.
